After 7 to 12 years of shearing, pest control, fertilizer, and mowing, our trees are ready for harvest. Starting in August, trees in blocks we plan to harvest are tagged. We utilize a color code system which identifies trees by grade and size. By pre-tagging trees we keep an inventory of trees available for harvest. These color-coded tags are particularly handy when and if snow covers the trees during the harvest season!
Unlike almost any other business or any other form of agriculture, Christmas tree producers have a very small window, usually 3-4 weeks, to make an entire years income. To say it is stressful is an understatement.
Wholesale – at Evergreen Acres we begin cutting wholesale trees around the 10th to 12th of November, filling our wholesale orders in the order in which our customers want them shipped. To preserve freshness, trees are cut, baled, and loaded onto specially constructed wagons and stored indoors in unheated, high humidity, storage barns. We try to stay 2-3 days ahead of the scheduled shipping dates; again to maintain high tree quality.
Retail – since we open the Saturday after Thanksgiving, we begin cutting trees a day or two before we open. We continue cutting as we need to in order to maintain a fresh supply for our customers.
